Benedictines everywhere seem to have farming as one of their ministries or endeavors. The
House of Bread in Nanaimo has always practiced good stewardship of their land. Since
moving to the five plus acres here on Westwood Lake we have developed a tree farm, growing
a variety of pine and evergreen trees for sale. In addition we have extensive vegetable
gardens for our own use and the kitchen of Bethlehem Retreat Centre. Care of the land and
tools is evident, most of the work being done by the sisters.

Three llamas were added a couple of years ago to give us enjoyment, to help crop the
grass, and provide wool, and manure. In addition we have a flock of ducks who even
"winter over"on our small pond.
